How significant is durability in vernacular house construction?

    Get PDF
For centuries, dynamic vernacular society has experienced repairing, or demolishing old houses, and constructing new houses. The time interval between those actions probably became more sparsely spread as modern and more durable technologies and materials offered wider range of options in the vernacular construction through globalization. The first objective of this paper was to compare the durability of distinctively old and new construction materials and technologies used in the vernacular houses in a context of northern Iran. The second objective was to search implicit values behind making decisions regarding durability. The ‘old’ construction technologies were ‘Kali’, Mud Houses, and Lar deh ee”, and, while Load-bearing wall, Concrete, and Steel structure were the ‘new’ categories. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 167 residents of different vernacular houses and 18 of them were selected for interview. Besides, a number of 20 experts also participated in a mailing survey for validating the data. Perception of users on durability of structure was assessed and compared through 5 elements namely foundation, floor, wall, roof, and attachment through the structured-questionnaire, while the implicit values were revealed from data collected through the open-ended interview. Results showed that residents tend to rate the old houses higher, rather controversially. Commercialization might be gradually inclining users’ choices towards new houses, but responses also showed that a house is likely to be redundant after only a couple of generations, even though it still has a long durable lifetime to spare, thus making the durability issue less significant

    Get PDF
Over the past few years, Bitcoin has attracted the attention of numerous parties, ranging from academic researchers to institutional investors. Bitcoin is the first and most widely used cryptocurrency to date. Due to the significant volatility of the Bitcoin price and the fact that its trading method does not require a third party, it has gained great popularity since its inception in 2009 among a wide range of individuals. Given the previous difficulties in predicting the price of cryptocurrencies, this project will be developing and implementing a time series approach-based solution prediction model using machine learning algorithms which include Support Vector Machine Regression (SVR), K-Nearest Neighbor Regression (KNN), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to determine the trend of bitcoin price movement, and assessing the effectiveness of the machine learning models. The data that will be used is the close prices of Bitcoin from the year 2018 up to the year 2023. The performance of the machine learning models is evaluated by comparing the results of R-squared, mean absolute error (MAE), mean squared error (RMSE), and also through a visualization graph of the original close price and predicted close price of Bitcoin in a dashboard. Among the models compared, LSTM emerged as the most accurate, followed by SVR, while XGBoost and KNN exhibited comparatively lower performance

Overall thermal transfer value of naturally ventilated double skin facade in Malaysia

    Get PDF
As one of the many paths to achieve a sustainable built environment, the Malaysia uniform building bye-law with the new amendment stipulates that the OTTV of a building envelope with a total air-conditioned area exceeding 4000 m2 should not exceed 50 W/m2. Although, the existing formulae provided for calculating OTTV is only applicable to a traditional single skin façade (SSF) building. Therefore, this paper seeks to investigate and evaluate how the natural ventilation in the cavity of a naturally ventilated double skin façade (NVDSF) will impact the OTTV of a building integrated with this façade typology. To achieve this goal, a hypothetical base-case was designed to represent a typical commercial building in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The calculated OTTV value of the base case is compared with that of the same building integrated with naturally ventilated cavity using dynamic simulation software (EnergyPlus/DesignBuilder) tool. The result indicates that the annual heat transferred through the east orientation of the building is higher than all other orientations and by integrating a naturally ventilated cavity on all orientations would reduce the cooling load over traditional single skin building by a range between 46% and 84%. However, the cost implication of investing in buildings with this kind of façade require more exploration for a better understanding on the return of investment in Malaysia context

Polyphenylsulfone-based solvent resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) membrane incorporated with copper-1,3,5 benzenetricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) nanoparticles for methanol separation

    Get PDF
Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) of various properties were prepared for a solvent resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) process by incorporating polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) membranes with self-synthesized copper-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) nanoparticles at different loadings. Cu-BTC nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in PPSU dope solution prior to the casting process, and their subsequent presence in the PPSU membrane was inferred by a combination of FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, SEM, EDX and AFM analyses. These analyses confirmed the existence of Cu-BTC particles and their distribution pattern in the membrane matrix. Membrane performance in organic solvent nanofiltration was evaluated on the basis of methanol permeance and dye–methanol separation. Results showed that membrane pure methanol flux was significantly improved from 102 L m-2 h-1 in the pristine PPSU membrane to >135 L m-2 h-1 in the 3 wt% Cu-BTC incorporated into PPSU membrane when both membranes were tested at 14 bar. Apart from preferential channels created by Cu-BTC, the existence of interfacial voids in MMMs also contributes to the flux improvement owing to the formation of alternative paths for solvent transportation. Results also showed that the membranes incorporated with low loadings of Cu-BTC (ranging between 0.5 and 1.0 wt%) tended to have smaller molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) than that of pristine PPSU and PPSU incorporated with 3 wt% nanoparticles, leading to smaller surface pore size but better separation efficiency. The improvement in membrane flux and dye rejection at low Cu-BTC loadings could be attributed to the good dispersion of the nanoparticles in the membrane matrix coupled with their improved interfacial contact with the membrane. The newly developed membrane also showed a great improvement in terms of resistance to compaction, suggesting Cu-BTC particles are of importance in increasing membrane rigidity and strength

    Get PDF
The flipped classroom is considered an instructional strategy and a type of blended learning instruction that focused on active learning and student engagement. Over the years, flipped classroom studies have focused more on the advantages and challenges of flipped instruction and its effectiveness, but little is known about the state of self-regulation in flipped classrooms. This study investigates the self-regulation strategies as well as the supports proposed for self-regulated learning in flipped classrooms. Findings show that relatively few studies have focused on self-regulated learning in flipped classrooms compared to the overall research and publication productivity in flipped classrooms. Also, the existing solutions and supports have only focused on either self-regulation or online help-seeking, but have not focused on other specific types of self-regulation strategies. Our study proposed some future research recommendations in flipped classrooms
